Sheffield University Ethical & Environmental Committee

What we do

We organise social activities and events for all students such as Fairtrade Fortnight and a pedal-powered film screening for Earth Hour. We also campaign for the University to make changes towards being more environmentally-friendly and ethical.

For example we worked with People and Planet to bring a referendum to ban all bottled water from the Students Union which was a huge success and had overwhelming support. We also worked with them to bring about the end of greyhound racing being promoted as a Union 'Give it a Go' event, and for vegan labeling of wine in the Union restaurant. We've also been strongly involved in external campaigns such as 'Switch It Off' and 'Bring It, Don't Bin It', the latter of which we've recently held two 'free shops' for, together attracting over 300 students.

Last year we managed to get a student allotment at Endcliffe residences so this will be a focus for the coming year.

Further details

The Ethical & Environmental Committee meets every Wednesday, 4-5pm during term time, with all meetings until (and including) the 5th December 2012 in Gallery Room 3 in the Students' Union.
