What measures have they made to reduce their carbon footprint?

In January 2007, DLA Piper launched its Global Sustainability Initiative (GSI). DLA Piper's aim is to develop a strategy that will change and adapt as it responds to the demands and challenges of creating a more environmentally responsible business.

The three key elements to the GSI are:

  1. Certification to ISO 14001: Within the first year of launching the GSI, DLA Piper became the first legal practice to achieve global certification to ISO 14001 - the worldwide standard for environmental management which ensures that organisations take account of their environmental impacts. DLA Piper has since maintained its global certification.

  2. Setting of carbon emissions reduction targets in the four key impact areas of energy, waste, travel and procurement: DLA Piper's actions have included: installing smart metering and movement sensors for lighting; recycling photocopier / printer cartridges; enforcing a 'no travel week'; purchasing fair trade products; promoting duplex printing; switching business travel for video, web and audio conferencing where possible; encouraging sustainable travel to work; and the introduction of biodegradable canteen containers and cutlery.

  3. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through more efficient business travel and the purchase of carbon offsets for unavoidable air travel: For example, in 2009 DLA  Piper offset its 2008 carbon emissions by investing in an energy efficient stove project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project reduced local air pollution and helped improve residents quality of life.

Since its conception, the take up of the GSI has been significant with a total in excess of 4,000 hours spent on GSI by employees at DLA Piper. This contribution has helped DLA Piper to make both energy and cost savings.For example, the TravelSMART campaign and 'no-travel week' has helped reduce travel expenditure by £100,000 and  reduce carbon emissions from travel by 1,287 kgs from 2007 to 2008.

As regards energy, DLA Piper has made mega watt savings of 2,173 MWh from 2006/07 to 2008/09. Other key achievements include the London and Glasgow offices reducing their energy consumption from 2006 to 2008 by 28.55% and 11.08% respectively.
